Protect Gatineau Park: residents rally behind local petition

Gatineau Park, a cherished natural gem in the region, is facing critical challenges that threaten its preservation. In response to mounting concerns, Sophie Chatel, Member of Parliament for Pontiac, and her Liberal colleagues from the Outaouais region have taken the initiative to protect the park through a local petition. This grassroots movement aims to raise awareness and garner support among residents for the legal protection of Gatineau Park.
Supported by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), the petition was launched by John McDonnell from Mayo, with the goal of urging the Quebec government to amend the National Capital Act. The proposed amendments would grant Gatineau Park the necessary legal protection, including clearly defined boundaries set in an Act of Parliament. With the park's vulnerability to removal, development, and disposal without parliamentary authorization, the petition seeks to safeguard Gatineau Park for future generations. Gatineau Park, renowned as one of the province's most visited parks, serves as a sanctuary for nearly 90 endangered plant species and 50 endangered animal species.
Sophie Chatel, a passionate advocate for Gatineau Park's protection, has been instrumental in rallying support for the petition. On March 25, 2023, she presented an initial batch of 600 signatures in the House of Commons, emphasizing the urgent need for legislative protection. The park's vulnerability is further highlighted by recent developments within its boundaries, including the construction of new houses near Kingsmere Lake, which contradict the park's mandate and have sparked public outcry.
As the petition deadline of July 19 approaches, the support and involvement of residents are crucial. The collected signatures will demonstrate overwhelming public backing for Gatineau Park's protection, amplifying the message to decision-makers and urging them to take immediate action.
