In a bid to address the labour shortage and tap into the potential of experienced workers, FADOQ – Région Outaouais launched two practical guides on March 26, 2024. These guides are aimed at employers and experienced workers in the Outaouais region, providing them with tools and insights to navigate the evolving job market.
The launch event marked the culmination of extensive research and initiatives undertaken by FADOQ since 2020. The organization has been dedicated to understanding the dynamics of the experienced workforce, conducting surveys with over 4,000 respondents, and engaging in consultations, focus groups, and data analysis. The findings have paved the way for practical solutions to integrate and retain workers aged 50 and over in the workforce.
The first guide, "Branché Guide," is a 30-page reflection tool for employers. It addresses the challenges faced by businesses in retaining and attracting qualified workers amid a labour shortage. The guide covers topics such as the benefits of hiring experienced workers, retention strategies, diversity in the workplace, continuous training, and employer branding. It encourages employers to consider the emerging trends in human resource management focused on experienced workers and provides practical tips and accessible measures to implement these strategies.
Anne Desforges, Director General of FADOQ – Région Outaouais, stated, "These guides will be distributed throughout the Outaouais region, with a focus on engaging local municipalities and chambers of commerce. Our main challenge is to ensure that employers recognize the value of experienced workers and adopt a reflective approach to human resource management. We hope that these guides will facilitate a shift in perception and foster an environment that is more receptive to the inclusion of experienced workers in the workforce."
The second guide, "Ma Voie, Mon Choix," is designed for experienced workers aged 50 and over. It serves as a roadmap for those considering returning to the job market or changing their vocation. The guide prompts reflection on various aspects such as the reasons to re-enter the workforce, the impact on income and pension, and preparation for a career shift. It is based on the values of the targeted generations and aims to motivate them to continue contributing to the workforce.
Both guides are available in virtual and printed formats and will be distributed across the Outaouais region. The distribution plan includes collabouration with municipalities, chambers of commerce, and other local entities to ensure widespread access to these resources.
The launch of these guides is a significant step towards addressing the labour shortage in the region and recognizing the valuable contribution of experienced workers. FADOQ – Région Outaouais hopes that these tools will fuel reflection and action among employers and workers, leading to a more inclusive and dynamic workforce.
