Could your dry skin be due to eczema?
Most frequently observed in children, eczema is a chronic, non-contagious skin condition characterized by an inflammation of the epidermis. While there are different types of eczema, the most common is atopic dermatitis, a hereditary disorder that causes skin to react negatively to various allergens.
Common symptoms include:
- Dry, irritated skin
- Flaky or blistered skin
- Redness and swelling
These symptoms commonly surface on the hands, ankles and protruding parts of the face (such as the forehead), as well as in the folds of the elbows and knees. If you notice irregularities in your skin’s texture and appearance in any of these areas, consult a doctor without delay.
He or she can determine if eczema is indeed the culprit and provide you with a list of preventive measures (e.g. reducing stress levels, using a mild type of soap, avoiding tobacco, moisturizing frequently, etc.)
