Chelsea Changes Waste Rules
Reuel S. Amdur
At the January 14 meeting of Chelsea Council, Mayor Pierre Guénard reported that, beginning in February, waste collection will be done differently. The change is in line with the province’s effort to modernize and expand the collection process. The new program combines waste collections in Chelsea and Cantley.
In the new program, collection bins need to be placed in a designated fashion. A robot arm takes the bin, empties it, and replaces it. The placement facilitates the collection by the robot arm. As before, there are separate bins for recyclables, compostables, and final waste.
The mayor emphasized that cardboard boxes of waste next to bins and other stuff outside of bins will not be taken, while adding that there may be some leeway in February and March as people become adjusted to the new arrangement.
Rules for bulky items are yet to be determined.
