Teen altercation at D'Arcy McGee High School in Gatineau sparks concern

An incident at D'Arcy McGee High School has become the focal point of discussions around youth violence in Gatineau. On September 19, two teenage girls were involved in a disturbing altercation during lunchtime. The altercation, which was recorded and subsequently uploaded to Instagram by students, has reignited concerns about violence on school premises and the broader implications of social media's role in such incidents.

Sources from the scene reported to police that a member of the school staff intervened in the midst of the altercation. However, the most alarming aspect for many was not the incident itself but the immediate rush by students to document and share it on social media. The video, which quickly garnered a significant number of views, has since been taken down from Instagram.

One of the teenagers involved allegedly sustained non-life-threatening injuries. In the aftermath, the Gatineau City Police Service (SPVG) confirmed that a file would be forwarded to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions in the Youth Division.

Attempts to reach D'Arcy McGee High School for a statement have been met with silence, as school officials have opted not to respond to the incident publicly. This lack of communication has left parents, students, and community members with growing concerns and unanswered questions.

While this incident has garnered significant attention due to its public nature, data from the SPVG indicates a broader trend of escalating youth violence in schools in Gatineau. Notably, categories such as armed assault and uttering threats have seen fluctuating but concerning numbers over the past few years.
